The first references to the existence of olive trees on the island of Corfu are found in Homer’s Odyssey. Extra virgin olive oil is the basis of the Mediterranean diet and has always been produced for family consumption in the family’s olive groves.
The Konstantis family acquired the first authorized mill in 1940. However, the family mills had been in operation since 1897. During the first decades (1897-1910), traditional methods of producing olive oil were followed, while from the middle from the 20th century onwards, the production of the family oil mill increased considerably as the new machinery allowed a greater production of oil in a shorter time.
In the visit to the oil mill it will be possible to have information on the history of the olive tree and the olive oil production industry in Corfu, brief hints on the care of the olive grove (tree, cultivation, ploughing)
